What is Manuka Honey?
Manuka Honey is made from New Zealand native Leptospermum scoparium, or Manuka (Manuka is the Maori name fro the shrub). The Manuka shrub is also known as the New Zealand 'tea-tree', as its leaves were used by Captain Cook and countless later settlers to brew a spicy tea. Manuka has distinctive delicate white or pink flowers, which bloom late Spring/early Summer. Manuka honey is New Zealand's most famous and popular honey and has health-giving properties over and above that of other New Zealand honeys.
What is so special about UMF Active Manuka Honey?
While we have been aware for centuries of the hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property of all types of honey, Professor Peter Molan, who heads the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, discovered that Manuka Honey had an especially remarkable antibacterial property, found only in the Leptospermum species. This has been called d the Unique Manuka Factor, or UMF.
